The current edition

What Edition 2026.1 actually represents

Edition 2026.1 is the current controlled standards set for the CHSPS portfolio. Its 17 normative documents consist of the shared CHSPS Core Requirements, CHSPS-CORE-100, plus one current standard for each of the 16 active program codes.

The portfolio is deliberately layered rather than flat. Eleven codes are accreditation pathways: five general pathways and six specialty pathways. Five additional codes are defined offering standards for narrower endorsements, Certified Systems, provider supplements or scope modules.

What is genuinely new in 2026? Work-Based Learning & Competency Program Accreditation (WBL / CHSPS-WBL-450) was introduced on June 20, 2026 and became effective with Edition 2026.1 on August 19. The rest of the portfolio reflects programs developed across earlier years and carried forward into the current edition.
01

One current edition

Current requirements are consolidated under Edition 2026.1 instead of requiring applicants to reconcile active requirements across multiple edition years.

02

One shared core

CORE-100 supplies common governance, evidence, impartiality, claims and lifecycle controls while program standards add scope-specific requirements.

03

One public record

The Standards Registry and Program Status pages remain the controlling public sources for the current edition, scope and status.

2026 milestones

The operating milestones around Edition 2026.1

The edition sits inside a broader 2026 sequence of standards-governance, verification, accountability and portfolio actions. These milestones help explain how the current edition reached its present form.

Comment and disposition workflow

A standing process for standards comments, actions and disposition reporting was published.

Verification and mark controls

Verification, seal use and public status claims were aligned around the current official record.

Accountability disclosures

Governance, impartiality, funding and accountability disclosures were expanded.

WBL introduced

Work-Based Learning & Competency Program Accreditation was introduced under CHSPS-WBL-450.

Edition 2026.1 activated

Published Aug 12, approved Aug 18 and effective Aug 19 across the current portfolio.

Applicant and trust guidance expanded

Public-accountability, applicant-help and My CHSPS guidance were connected more clearly to the current record.

Current portfolio map

Sixteen active program codes, organized by what CHSPS evaluates

The right route depends on the unit of assurance: a credentialing program, education system, course, specialized operating system, or a narrower defined offering. The code tells you the route; the approved scope tells you what is actually accredited or certified.

5

General accreditation pathways

The primary unit of accreditation is the certification, education, course, certificate/micro-credential or work-based learning program.

How the architecture fits together

Three layers, different assurance purposes

01

General accreditation

Used when the principal unit under review is a certification program, education provider, course, assessment-based credential system or work-based learning program.

02

Specialty accreditation

Used when the assurance problem is a specialized system such as high-stakes assessment integrity, remote examination administration, medication safety, workforce competency, clinical education quality or organization-wide AI governance.

03

Defined offerings

Used for narrower assurance objects such as an AI-assessment endorsement, a named AI proctoring or learning system, a provider AI supplement, or a telehealth competency scope module.

Program code is not the same as accredited scope.

A code identifies the applicable CHSPS route. The public accreditation record identifies the actual organization, program, system, version or scope covered by a decision.

Accreditation does not attach to individual people.

CHSPS accredits defined programs and systems. Certification, certificates or other credentials held by individuals are issued by the credentialing or education program itself.

Why WBL matters in 2026

The new pathway closes a specific assurance gap

WBL exists for structured learning models in which competence is demonstrated partly through observed workplace performance. That includes apprenticeship, residency-style, supervised-practice and other structured work-based programs where completion or competency decisions depend on evidence gathered in the work setting.

The distinction matters because WBL is not simply another education-provider category and it does not accredit an employer as a whole. It gives CHSPS a defined review unit for the program architecture, supervision, evidence, competency decisions and governance surrounding work-based learning.

This is consistent with the broader portfolio design: new pathways are added when the object and evidence model are materially different enough to require their own assurance framework.
